American Dinner

After our dinner at Birgitte's, they were all very interested in what we had to say, and wanted us to make them an American dinner. We found most of the ingredients here, but some of them were brought back to us from the US (Thyra went home for a week). Our menu was very random (and kid-friendly almost), but what we felt was true American...at least as best as we could make with what we had. Everything was sort of a hodge podge, but made sense in the end. Here was our menu:

Appetizers
PB & J Sandwiches (they don't eat them together here, and peanut butter is for rich, spoiled kids apparently; one of them REALLY liked them, the others tasted it, but it wasn't there favorite)
Grilled Cheese Sandwiches with Campbell's tomato soup (they loved this)
Salad
-I got this recipe from my dad--my favorite salad he makes!-
Romaine lettuce (still stuck together at the core) and BBQ'd on each side
Sauteed pepitos, corn
Diced tomatoes
(Supposed to have) diced avocado, but can't figure that out here; all avocado we have bought is not normal...like, not ripe at all; you could crunch on it like a fruit
---They all loved this!---
Main Course
Cheeseburgers (with Havarti cheese) - hamburger meat is awesome here!
Potato Chips
Kraft Mac & Cheese (they LOVED this)
Ants on a log (they all tried it, some like, some didn't)
Dessert
Dirt Cake (we were nervous about this because we had to whip cream ourselves, but it turned out awesome, complete with gummy worms and all!) They Loved this!!! Probably way to much sugar for their standards, but they took some home with them.
Drinks
Coke and Coke Light
Red Wine
WE FOUND AMERICAN BEERS!!! much more expensive, so we just some for them to sample - not the best America has to offer, but they tried Coors Light and Sam Adams
Smirnoff Ice (they drink this a lot here--we were told it was a rich people drink, because it is expensive)

The kitchen as we were preparing

Rachel's face after we realized our dirt cake actually TASTED good!

How we set our tables for dinner. They do candlelight for everything...so lights were off and candles everywhere.

Thyra eating her ants on a log; she broke her arm earlier that week in a biking accident.

We were sooo excited to present them with the dirt cake. The looks on their faces was priceless. We opted for the American flag instead of fake flowers...Granny (or Cathy and Gigi...recognize that flag)?
